A cardiovascular disease is any disease that causes problems with the heart or blood vessels. Cardiovascular diseases, also known as CVDs, are the number-one cause of death in the world. The World Health Organization says that by 2030, 23 million people will die from CVDs. Most of these deaths will be due to heart attacks and strokes, both of which are CVDs. In 2000, some groups thought people needed to know more about these killer diseases. So World Heart Day was started that year. Read More...

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States, is characterized by impairments in communication and socialization and is often marked by repetitive behaviors such as rocking and head banging. ASD is more prevalent than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined and its rising prevalence poses an enormous economic challenge to both families and schools burdened by this epidemic. Due to the rising incidence of ASD, classrooms are faced with a new challenge of providing appropriate and individualized instruction to more students with the disorder, albeit with fewer resour... When an opera critic hailed her as, ‘perhaps the greatest black opera singer of all time,’ famous soprano Leontyne Price responded with, “What’s black got to do with it?” Exactly. Her fierce dedication, discipline, training and hard work – in a word, character – not color, defined her. Yet, news editors around the country are likely rummaging through archives to recycle columns today in commemoration of Black History Month. Read More...

Innovative Solutions to the Autism Crisis in Education

Evelyn Gould, MS | 10/06/2011

The dramatic increase in the incidence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) among children and the current economic climate presents an increasing challenge to both families and schools. Budget cuts mean schools are faced with larger class sizes, decreased access to training and resources, and fewer staff at a time when they are seeing more children with autism in their classrooms. With states scrambling to save more money in coming months and years, the situation in education is set to worsen. Essentially, schools are finding themselves increasingly “on their own” when it comes to accessing the training and tools they need to provide an effec... Read More...

Waiting for "Superman"? - Don't hold your breath

Samuel J. Spitalli | 05/20/2011

While the documentary “Waiting for Superman” does make some valid observations on the issues challenging American education today, it fails largely under the weight of its own kryptonite: that there is a crisis in public education. Believing in the myth of a crisis in education is kind of like believing in the man of steel himself, only in reverse—Superman can do nothing wrong, just as public schools and teachers can’t do anything right. If you suspend your disbelief, then every fallacy in the film (and there are many) can seem plausible, but Davis Guggenheim’s documentary bombs on so many levels that it’s hard to know where to start. Let’s p... Read More...

Collaborative Learning and Professional Development

Professional development needs to change. We know this. With the advent of the social web, learning is anytime, anywhere, networked and collaborative. And learning in this way is already being done in large measure by our students, without us. While more national organizations are calling for the teaching of 21st Century skills and the shift to a learning community framework, few models exist for preparing educators to understand how to be a co-learner with their students in this fast-changing learning landscape. “Is it okay that I don’t believe anyone can do this?” the prospective parent asked gravely. Mary Beth Cull, coordinator for the Light on Literacy Program at the Columbia University Medical School hears this question a lot. The program teaches autistic children how to read, even when they are not able to speak. Cull has seen non-verbal, uncooperative children with no language skills enter their program and emerge reading and writing — an unheard of feat for autistic children. “We have a great track record — decades of success using this method and a community of parents, children and professionals who vouch for its efficacy. But until people ... Read More...

Where Does Physical Education Belong in Our Schools?

JAMES F. SALLIS, Ph.D | 11/19/2009

Physical education (PE) is at the intersection of at least three major academic thoroughfares. PE has roots in exercise and sports science, and represents a primary means of applying the science. PE is itself a pedagogical field and is practiced within educational systems. The public health field claims PE as a health intervention that is of increasing value due to the childhood obesity epidemic. Major intersections are often centers of culture and commerce, but the turf surrounding PE is often contested. Read More...
