It is a privilege to take the helm of SEEN Magazine with this, our fall issue. It’s been a pleasure to work with the dedicated staff at SEEN who bring such passion about education and our readers to every issue. We have some great articles prepared for you for our “Back to School” issue. The special focus this time around is “The Education Career Path” — a broad topic that has been much in the news lately. So it was wonderful to have the opportunity to speak with Camilla Benbow, Dean of Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development. Read More...

From the Editor - Spring 2011
Charles Sosnik | 03/21/2011
Collaboration is such a broad term. In education, it takes many forms. There is the collaboration between student and teacher. Collaboration between student and student. Collaboration between teachers. Between school and home. Between districts. Between disciplines. Between agencies. Between locations. Between public and private sectors. In this issue, we celebrate collaboration in all its forms. Using the simple premise that none of us is as smart as all of us, we explore the many ways educators use collaboration to accomplish one important goal – the education of our children. Kudos to my friend Franklin Schargel, who has just finished his... Read More...

Independent Schools - Winter 2010
Charles Sosnik | 11/19/2010
The theme of our winter issue is Independent Schools. I asked Jim McDaniel, Headmaster of the Linden Hill School in Northfield, MA to write a lead article that would make the case for Independent Schools . As Jim laid out his argument, I began to realize that there is much to be learned by public schools from the independent school model. The simple fact is, unless we quickly build about 100,000 new independent schools (give or take), independent schools will not be an option for all our kids. What is an option, however, is to take the tenets of the independent school experience and apply it to our own public schools. For families that choos... Read More...

FROM the EDITOR Fall 2010
Charles Sosnik | 08/23/2010
I have a real passion for education. One of my favorite things to do is to share ideas with others who are equally passionate about educating our children. So I was particularly pleased to get a call from our Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Normally, when a cabinet-level individual calls, you would expect a lot of formality – a secretary to the Secretary placing the call and getting you on the line so He can speak to you. No such pomp here. The call came in around 4:30 and I was greeted by “Hi, this is Arne Duncan.” It was like we had been talking for years. That’s Arne. Genuine. Passionate. And genuinely passionate about education. The ... Read More...

FROM the EDITOR Spring 2010
Charles Sosnik | 03/31/2010
I met David Houle through my friend Darryl Rosser, CEO of Sagus International. David is one of our nation’s leading futurists. In addition to writing books and delivering keynote speeches, David advises Fortune 500 companies about the future and how to prepare for it. In his past life as a media executive, he was on the team that launched MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1 and CNN Headline News. He also helped to create two television series on A&E for his client Bill Kurtis, Investigative Reports and American Justice , introducing single subject documentaries and legal programming to prime time before those programming concepts became common place. So I... Read More...

FROM the EDITOR Winter 2009
Charles Sosnik | 11/20/2009
Depending on who you are, 21st Century Learning may be learning with technology, learning with rigor and relevance, learning to communicate, learning about our place in the global marketplace, learning about health, learning about our civic responsibilities, learning to think critically and creatively, learning to master our core subjects, learning life and career skills and learning to be good leaders. 21st Century Learning is all these things and more. It is a set of skills. But more than that, 21st Century Learning is a philosophy of learning that says “I do not exist in a vacuum. In addition to knowledge and understanding of my academic ... I may be showing my age a bit, but in my day Education Technology was an oxymoron. Even though I didn’t have to walk 6 miles to school — barefoot — in the snow everyday like my sister, it was still a different era. I do remember someone bringing a “portable calculator” to Mr. Wilson’s 8th grade class. It weighed 4 pounds and couldn’t even do square roots. Read More...
