Who could have guessed that a gift from an illegitimate son of an English lord would lead to the formation of the world’s most famous museum and research complexes, one that is situated in Washington DC and is visited by millions of excited visitors each year? The bequest of $580,000, a fortune when it was donated in 1846, was made by James Smithson, a member of Britain’s Royal Society. Smithson was an analytical chemist of some repute in Europe.
