A team building revival: How to produce real change in students
Monnie Leigh S. Meads | 08/09/2011
Imagine you are precariously balanced on the edge of a high platform, and behind you, with arms laced together, stand a group of people that have been instructed to catch you. Your heart beats faster as you shut your eyes, cross your arms over your chest, take a deep breath and tip backwards, hoping that group of people who say they will catch you really know what they are doing. If you have ever been in a Team Building experience you might be familiar with this activity. It is called the Trust Fall, and it has the potential to be either one of the most influential developmental experiences or, unfortunately, one that has faint impact and is ... Read More...

Offering a multitude of educational and cultural experiences through museums, festivals and architecture; however, one of its lesser known educational experiences takes place on some of Florida’s oldest and unexplored attractions — its trails. The Lost Sea and the discovery of Craighead Caverns
| 11/19/2010
Craighead Caverns was named after an Indian chief who at one time owned the property and the cave, and who may well have discovered the tiny opening that was its natural entrance. Chief Craighead acquired the land through either the Ocoee or Hiwassee Land Grants. Artifacts found in the vicinity of the “Council Room” around 1927-28, included pottery, arrowheads, weapons, etc., and indicated deep penetration of Cherokee Indians to this circular room where it is speculated they may have held council meetings. Take a walk on the wild side of education The NWTF’s headquarters is the ultimate outdoor education experience
| 08/23/2010
Ten-year-old Evan smiled as he climbed out of the Forest Service helicopter from his tag-along mission to improve habitat for wildlife. The hum of the propellers and the roar of the engine in the flight simulator were something he didn’t want his friend Keisha to miss. He found her across the room holding a wild turkey feather and listening to a wise Native American elder tell stories of how his people used wildlife to sustain themselves long ago. The two fifth-graders and their classmates were in the middle of an exciting field trip to the Wild Turkey Center and Winchester Museum in Edgefield, S.C. Read More...

Skiing — An Accessible Winter Exercise to Complement Physical Activities for Students
FREDRICK REICHLE, MD | 11/20/2009
Approximately one in five young people between the ages of six and 17 are overweight. There is an epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States and around the world. Millions of these young people face a higher risk much earlier in life of developing diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke and some types of cancer. The two main contributing factors are a plentiful supply of food high in calories, fat and sugar and a lack of physical activity. Part of the solution could involve re-introducing mandatory physical activities in public schools. Another important aspect is parents taking a corrective role in their child’s physical activ...
