What students can expect when pursuing careers in culinary arts
MARK W. ALLISON | 11/27/2011
Over 600 students graduated in May 2011 at our Charlotte Johnson and Wales graduation ceremony at the Time Warner Cable Arena; ready to join the work force in hospitality — one of the biggest industries in the world. Many of the students I talked to stated that they hoped to own their own business upon graduation or after gaining valuable industry knowledge in the future. This leads to the question: Do they understand the expectations of the modern day chef? Read More...

Technology’s growing impact on teaching and learning Finding a graduate program to help you keep pace
JENNIFER BOUCHARD | 11/27/2011
There is no longer much debate about the need to integrate technology into our classrooms. It is clear that technology can and should play a significant role in how we help students develop the skills they need to be successful in today’s competitive, ever-changing global workplace. The challenge is that many teachers have not had the education and training necessary to fully leverage the power of technological tools to improve teaching and learning. Read More...

Selecting the ‘best fit’ graduate program: Some big questions
STEVE D. THOMPSON, Ph.D. | 11/27/2011
The search for the best school to meet personal and professional needs is often a daunting task. Many times, apprehension and fear permeate this decision. Sometimes circular logic contributes to the cognitive dissonance related to the question. Recriminations fester. A litany of questions related to one’s interior musings often emerge, including: Do I have the time? Will I have the money? What am I going to do with this degree? What will this get me in the end? What sort of sacrifice will I have to really make? Who do I listen to regarding the best advice? Read More...

Greater earning capability, career enhancement and promotional opportunities are just a few of the reasons for continuing your education by earning a graduate degree. Depending upon the type of graduate program, whether campus-based, online or hybrid, learning to balance work, family, and studies can be challenging, but not impossible if you take the time to properly research and plan before beginning your degree program. What works in technical jobs, career mapping and online education
SUSAN KANNEL | 11/27/2011
Workforce preparation for the “evolving information industry” is both complicated and critical. It involves two equally challenging questions which need to be continually answered: Where is the industry headed? And what workforce skills are required to get there? Just 10 years ago, telecom innovation included a fax machine — second phone line — in every home and an exorbitantly expensive cell phone the size of a brick. Today consumers expect to be connected at all times to phone, text, movies, shopping, social media and music, using a growing variety of interchangeable devices — all available at competitive prices. 5 things colleges wish their incoming students understood about college
Beth Wolfe | 08/09/2011
This fall, thousands of students will begin their college careers at institutions across the country. The educators and school personnel who played a key role in these students’ journeys to college have already turned their focus to a new class of students and will have little time to consider the fate of the college freshmen who were students in their school just a year ago. Vanderbilt Peabody’s Dean Camilla Benbow: Shaping future educators
Stephen Murphy | 08/09/2011
Camilla Benbow, Dean of Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development , talks about the role of the Education School in shaping the future of education. SEEN Magazine: Peabody College has been ranked #1 for graduate education for the third consecutive year. What do you think makes Peabody stand out among your peers? What makes the school unique? Dean Benbow: Relative to many of our peers, our small size means that our graduate and professional students benefit from strong mentoring relationships with faculty. And our faculty is among the best in the nation, with a history of national excellence in areas of specia... Read More...

Help students find academic success and plan for the future
Julie Hartline | 08/09/2011
When I graduated from college over 20 years ago with a double major in Latin and Psychology, I had no idea what career path to take. Realizing I wanted to make a difference, I took a job as a parole officer. From my picture, it is probably hard to imagine me carrying a badge and gun and walking through the projects of metropolitan Atlanta. My mother certainly had a hard time swallowing the idea, but I did just that in hopes of helping those on my case load change their lives. A picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. was in my office because it represented a world without limits to me, and those who walked in my door were faced with many limits. T... Read More...

Collaborative Learning and Professional Development
Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach | 09/14/2010
Professional development needs to change. We know this. With the advent of the social web, learning is anytime, anywhere, networked and collaborative. And learning in this way is already being done in large measure by our students, without us. While more national organizations are calling for the teaching of 21st Century skills and the shift to a learning community framework, few models exist for preparing educators to understand how to be a co-learner with their students in this fast-changing learning landscape. What makes the best college?
WILLIAM S. DINGELEDINE, JR. M.S. | 08/23/2010
“What’s the best college?” That is one of the most common questions asked of college counseling professionals. Our society is heavily focused on rankings of “the Best” – restaurants, sports teams, cars, cities, etc. In fact, the editor of the US News & World Reports Best Colleges Guide has claimed, “It is un-American not to have rankings.” As a result, the magazine has built its reputation and business model on that one issue. From one perspective, it seems like a straightforward, empirical question that can be answered fairly easily based on some general measure(s) of quality. In fact, US News is not the only media or organization that has ... Read More...

Jump start your path to a graduate or professional degree with a dual admission
KIM COHANE and ELLEN SAGNARD | 08/23/2010
You’ve probably heard it said — or even said it yourself — a bachelor’s degree today is the equivalent of what a high school diploma used to be years ago. The bar has been raised and obtaining an associate’s or bachelor’s degree is often not enough in today’s competitive world. Many students will need to continue their education in graduate school. While it is great advice for most young baccalaureates to gain real world experience before immersing themselves back into the halls of academia for a masters or doctorate, what about those whiz kids who always stood out in high school? You know, the one who knew she wanted to be a doctor since sh... Read More...

Teaching at a Faith-Based College
J. CARROLL SMITH, Ed.D. | 03/31/2010
I was asked to share the joys of working at a faith-based college. Although the last nine years of my career have been as a professor of education at a private Christian college, Gardner-Webb University, I started my educational career as an undergraduate in a large state university. I spent my next 21 years working in the public K-12 educational setting, teaching first in a rural North Carolina middle school, then in a Virginia inner city elementary school and then working as vice-principle and principle at schools with a student economically disadvantaged rate of 70-75 percent. Mississippi State University’s Elementary Education Program Poised to meet the needs of a global population
LAURA A. CRITTENDEN, PH.D. | 11/20/2009
In 1999, Northeast Mississippi Community College (NMCC) and Mississippi State University (MSU) launched the Northeast Pilot Project (NPP). The purpose behind the development of NPP was to embark on a project that combined both the talent and resources of the northeast region of the state as a means to address the critical shortage of quality teachers in public education. NPP attended to this national concern through the recruitment of rural, minority student populations that too often are underrepresented across two-year and four-year institutions. In turn, these students had the opportunity to participate in an innovative and challenging le... Read More...

Professional Development for the Virtual School Setting
DR. KATHERINE HAYDEN and STACEY CAMPO | 11/20/2009
Virtual high schools are beginning to be a common topic in K-12 districts as educators seek ways to meet the needs of today’s students and families. An essential element for virtual high school implementation is professional development for teachers who will be instructors in the online courses offered. The Poway Unified School District has implemented a professional development model for online teaching and learning as part of a strategic plan developed in 2008, addressing the needs of 21st century learners. Their successful model was developed in collaboration with a professor who brought expertise in effective strategies, pedagogy and sta... Read More...

The Changing Face of Education
NICOLE GUIDARA | 09/03/2009
The best place to look at how the world around us is changing is in a classroom. In this small space, we can often see the large effects of economic conditions, technological advances, and the diverse make-up of our population. Unfortunately, many teachers are outpaced by these developments and are not equipped with resources to deal with the challenges they present. Read More...
