There is a certain hurley-burley in education these days as the urgency to correct the math problem heightens. The search for a remedy is acute as research points to the need to make meaning — curricula are reshaped and programs are rewritten — all important changes. It’s 8:30 a.m. and the buzz and chatter in the room subside. “Good morning,”says the announcer to the 60-plus teachers sitting at tables throughout the room, each hopeful that the day will be worthwhile, bringing new light to his/her math teaching. Introductions are delivered and the guest speaker steps up to the micro-phone.There is a brief pause. “Has anyone here ever eaten a mango?” she asks. Where would you be without 3? China maybe! All cultures have specific marks and words we use to communicate a distinct idea related to quantity — ‘three-ness’. The special word and mark we assign to that idea distinguishes it from other ideas, like ‘two-ness,’or ‘four-ness’ or any other ‘ness’.
